Mission: A collaborative effort by local organizations aiming to improve the health of Poweshiek County by providing more opportunities for free, fresh, local produce in the community.

Needs: Volunteer opportunities are available for anyone who wants to get involved! The gardens are regularly maintained by volunteers and partners, ensuring any excess produce is delivered to local community centers. Each garden is run by a different group but volunteers are coordinated through the Ahrens Foundation. Locations are throughout town (Ahrens Park Garden, Grinnell Community Early Learning Center, St John’s Lutheran Church, Fairview Elementary School, Summer Street Park, Davis Elementary School, Marvin Garden, UPH-GRMC Public Health, and Bailey Park Elementary).

Operation information: During the growing season, the Giving Gardens depend on volunteers to maintain the gardens and harvest food. Harvested produce is then delivered to locations where community members can receive it. Area farmers and gardeners are also encouraged to donate excess produce to these locations.
