Knock and Drop Iowa

Website: https://knockanddropiowa.org/

Mission: Knock and Drop is an organization for positive community action by implementing programs that are beneficial to our Latino Community. Knock and Drop Iowa is a non-profit organization designed to bridge the gap between the underserved and disadvantaged in our community with the resources available.

Location: Des Moines (50 miles from Grinnell College)

Needs: You can volunteer for our special events or our food pantry day. We definitely need help with grant writing. Anyone that loves to write?  Creative minds also wanted for newsletter and blog wiriting, and podcasting.  We also need accounting and fundraising assistance – Zuli would love to learn how to use QuickBooks and file Knock and Drop’s taxes.  All help is very appreciated, there is still so much more that can be done.  The numbers of people we see at the food pantry alone every week keep growing, we are barely making a dent in the need for culturally specific support.

Operation information: In March of 2020, at the start of the pandemic,  Zuli Garcia saw a great need in the Latinx community and took action by founding Knock and Drop Iowa. Her vision started out as a small project to provide food and essential items to the Latinx community, in which volunteers would “knock” at the front door and “drop” the package, in the midst of COVID quarantine. In its short existence, this program has expanded into an advanced non-profit organization: from March to December 2020 alone Knock and Drop served 10,000 Latinx families with culturally appropriate food and no requirements of state-specific identification, etc, that can be a barrier to supporting this community. It has been able to help hundreds of families all over Iowa during these vulnerable times by bridging the gap between the Latinx community and the local resources available.

Thousands of people live everyday without food and other basic necessities. One of our main goals is to stop hunger by gathering food and providing it to those in need. Knock and Drop Iowa is funded by community support and donations.  Knock and Drop Iowa believes in making sure no one goes hungry. A child should never go to sleep with an empty stomach. We believe in helping and teaching knowledge to our community. Knock and Drop Iowa has so many dreams for the Latinx Community, and is working hard to partner with other organizations out there, to help in bridging the gaps between our Communities.
