Mission: The State Historical Society of Iowa has been a trustee of Iowa’s historical legacy since 1857. With a dual mission of preservation and education, it maintains a museum, two research centers, preservation office, and eight historic sites. The society preserves and provides access to Iowa’s historical resources through a variety of statewide programs, exhibitions and projects while serving as an advocate for Iowa’s past and connector to the future.

Location: Des Moines (54 miles from Grinnell College)

Needs: The department offers internships for currently enrolled college students. Opportunities vary each semester based on staff needs.

When is service needed: Internship opportunities are offered each semester. Spring and summer semesters are the most popular for internship opportunities.

Operation information: In addition to the administrative office of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs and the museum, the State Historical Society includes the State Historic Preservation Office which works to preserve and protect Iowa’s historic resources and holds education opportunities and workshops, the State Historic sites including site of Spirit Lake Massacre, Lewis and Clark, Oregon, Mormon, and California trails, homes of 2 of Iowa’s early governors, and more, and the Library & Archives Research Centers.
