Mission: Monsoon Asians & Pacific Islanders in Solidarity (formerly Monsoon United Asian Women of Iowa) serves victims/survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking in Asian and Pacific Islander (API) communities in Iowa. Monsoon’s mission is to end all forms of gender-based violence and build healthy communities through transformative justice and social change.

Location: Des Moines or Iowa City (58 miles from Grinnell College)

Prerequisites: General orientation as well as training on the Asian Pacific Islander communities, domestic violence, and sexual violence is all supplied.

 

Training supplied: Volunteers and staff are required to attend an orientation. For volunteers who are not planning to provide direct services to victims/survivors, a 8-hour training on API communities, domestic violence and sexual violence is required.  (Staff are required to complete a 40+hours training on the Asian Pacific Islander communities, domestic violence, sexual violence, and etc. )

Operation information: The organization serves all 99 counties in Iowa. Monsoon’s programs include direct services, community outreach and education, violence prevention and technical assistance. Monsoon has two offices: in Des Moines and in Iowa City. All staff members are multilingual and together speak 14 languages. Monsoon’s services are free and confidential.

Monsoon is funded by the Iowa Crime Victim Assistance Division (CVAD), U.S. Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) and the Iowa Department of Public Health (DPH).Monsoon Asians & Pacific Islanders in Solidarity is engaged in a breadth of services, including: Mobile Multilingual Advocates Program, Relief, Referrals, and Resources, the Community Accountability Project, On-campus Victim Services, the Sustainability Project, offering technical training and assistance, violence prevention, community outreach and education.

We maintain a community healing space and garden, and rather than holding support groups, we do tea talk, yoni chats, a sewing program, and weaving for healing.  Please visit our website for more information on all we do.
