Mission: Central Iowa Residential Services Inc. (CIRSI) is a private, not-for-profit organization providing advocacy; support; and services designed to help children and adults with intellectual disabilities or mental health issues. Mission: To provide individualized services to children and adults with intellectual or mental health disabilities…helping them obtain greater independence in their community through living, learning and doing.  CIRSI believes that every person is entitled to dignity and respect, regardless of disability.  CIRSI endeavors to provide support, empowerment and services that uphold each person’s dignity and respects the uniqueness of each individual.  We all have strengths and needs; it is inherent in being human.  We also have the right to make choices and decisions regarding how we utilize our strengths and meet our needs.  We believe people have the ability and motivation to learn, grow, at their own pace, in their own way.

Location: Grinnell (0.2 miles from Grinnell College)

Needs: Due to HIPAA/patient privacy issues and the training required to be involved with CIRSI, there is no volunteer program at this time but CIRSI has provided internships in the past.  Interns receive full staff training relevant to the level of care they will be providing, and are involved in regular staff activities.

 

Volunteers:  no volunteer opportunities at this time, but we do have possibilities for internships

Number of hours: Flexible, as much or little as is possible for the volunteer

Training supplied: Interns are treated as full staff members and are offered/required to have appropriate training such as Blood Borne Pathogen training, HIPAA, incident reporting, rights of people – approximately 10 hours of on-line training, all provided

Operation information: Two main programs offered: In-day and home-based.  The In-day program’s focus is on goal and support related activities (i.e. social skills, communication skills and/or behavior management).  The program provides a daily structure centered around three areas of focus: (1) Physical (exercise and self-care), (2) Mental (abilities and well-being), and Social/Recreational (crafts, relaxation/leisure and community integration).  Home-based habilitation is designed to assist/instruct individuals in adaptive skill development, assistance with activities of daily living, community inclusion, transportation, adult education, social and leisure skill development, personal care and protective oversight and supervision.
